Run Like Forrest Gump
Do you still remember the movie Forrest Gump? It’s about that guy that run across the entire
United States of America. As he ran, he kept repeating the same thing to himself: “Run, Forrest,
run!” And run he did, from the ocean shore of the Pacific all the way to the Atlantic. Paul tells
Timothy, and every believer for that matter, the same very thing in 1 Timothy 6:11. We need to
run. The immediate response from many: Why run? And yet, that’s not Paul’s concern, focusing
rather on asking us from what should we run? Sin, that’s what! We need to get as far away from
sin as possible. We need to make sure that we are never in the same place as sin. That’s where
trouble waits for us, because sin is never something to play around with. To compound matters,
simply trying to run away from sin is also not enough. We also actually need to run towards
Someone, towards Jesus Christ himself. It is only then that we’ll be safe, with sin at least one
step behind us, temptation having lost the race.
What are the things in your life that cause you to struggle over and over again? Perhaps they
remain ‘powerful’ because you haven’t decided to start running away from them. Today is the
day to start running, but please run in the right direction. Run to God. He is your safe haven.
