Use Your Mind Before You Use Your Tongue
Use your mind before you use your tongue. This isn't merely good advice, it is the truth as
well. Speaking without thinking is pure foolishness. The book of Proverbs is filled to the
brim with the repeated examples of the fact that the foolish cannot keep their tongue
under control. Thoughtless words are like knife stabbings; ultimately, they destroy,
creating unending hurt. The damage hasty words cause are often times irreversible. Once
you have uttered words, you can never recall them. Most of us step into the trap of
speaking first, and only then thinking. The solution? We need to daily pray for the right
words. We need to pray that our words are bathed in heavenly grace when they leave our
mouths, and that they will consistently be words of wisdom that give hope, building
another up in love. There are more than enough destructive tongues in our country, and
too many degrading conversations. We owe each other a new kind of language, a
language of hope. Our words should open up windows of God's goodness for others. Our
language need to be covered in His love. Only then are we are speaking well.
